Real Madrid 3-0 Espanyol Video Highlights | 21 September 2010

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema scored to lead Real Madrid to a 3-0 victory over Espanyol in the Spanish league on Tuesday.

The Portugal forward had to retake a penalty in the 62nd minute but confidently tucked it into the same spot at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

With both teams reduced to 10 men, Higuain slid Ronaldo's through ball past Carlos Kameni and inside the near post in the 78th for 2-0.

Benzema replaced Higuain and capped a well-worked buildup by Lassana Diarra, as the France striker shook off two Espanyol defenders inside the area before firing past Kameni for the last in the 88th.

Madrid took the overnight lead in the standings with Valencia able to regain top spot against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, when Barcelona can also keep pace with a win over Sporting Gijon.

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho still made defensive changes with Sami Khedira replacing Oezil and Alvaro Arbeloa on for Di Maria, but that didn't keep Espanyol at bay as it kept up the pressure: Alvaro Vazquez just missed with a header, while Kameni denied Higuain in the 78th.

Kameni then tipped Ronaldo's effort wide in the 82nd and Casillas tipped Alvaro's header over the bar just after to keep Espanyol from rallying. It was reduced to nine men after Juan Forlin was sent off for protesting following the last goal.

Benzema, who was on the substitutes' bench for the fifth straight game, showed Mourinho he was ready to contribute.

"I hope I have a lot more time to score more goals," Benzema said. "I'm going to work very hard for [Mourinho]."

Jose: I couldn't say 'no' to Utd

JOSE MOURINHO has dropped the biggest hint yet that he is ready to take over from Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager.
Speculation is mounting that Fergie will retire from football at the end of next season if he leads the club to an historic 19th league championship.

United would need to clinch this season’s Premier League and successfully defend it next year to break Liverpool’s title record.

And Inter Milan boss Mourinho – who has been linked with succeeding the 67-year-old in the past – has offered the clearest indication yet he is ready to assume the Old Trafford hotseat.

When asked if he and United could be ‘a marriage’ when Fergie finally retires, Mourinho said: “Who can say no? Nobody could say ‘no’.

“Manchester United belongs to a small group of clubs around the world where nobody can say ‘no’.

“But I don’t believe he is leaving in 2010. I think he will be the same the year after, healthy and happy.

“I don’t see a reason for him to quit and I hope he still goes on."

Former Chelsea coach Mourinho revealed he still enjoys a friendly relationship with the Scot – despite seeing his Serie A side dumped out of the Champions League by Fergie's Red Devils.

He added: "We both know how to lose and we know how to win.

“That's why after the 14 matches we have played between us – Porto, Chelsea and Inter – whether I win, he wins, or we draw, afterwards, the same respect is there."

Mourinho also refused to rule out a future switch to international management – and claimed a move to the United States could be on the cards.

The Portuguese said: "When you become a national coach life changes completely.

“You become much more an analyst than a coach. You train twice a month, you play once a month, sometimes once every two months.

"You have to wait for the big competitions to come round to become really involved like the World Cup. So at this stage it's not for me.

“But in the future, yes, and the US can be my future yes, and not just as national team manager but even a club team manager.

“It's the kind of country where you feel you could do something. There is huge potential."

Jose launches Beckham swipe

INTER MILAN boss Jose Mourinho has launched a thinly-veiled attack on David Beckham – accusing the midfielder of only going to America for the money.
Beckham became one of the highest paid players in football when he left Real Madrid to join LA Galaxy in July 2007.

But the former Manchester United star made little impression on the pitch and joined Italian giants AC Milan in January.

The deal was initially a short-term loan arrangement set up to help him stay fit during the Major League Soccer off-season.

But a string of impressive performances have seen Beckham extend his stay at the San Siro until the summer, meaning he will miss half of the MLS campaign.

And Mourinho – who is in the US to view the facilities for Inter’s forthcoming summer tour – has slammed the 33-year-old's actions.

He said: “What do I think about football in America?

"It takes more than an important player to make a competition equally important.

“They need people who are not thinking of coming here to take money and then leaving, but people who want to work in this country to insert themselves into American football.”

The tour will see Mourinho come up against former club Chelsea for the first time since his departure in 2007, as well as AC Milan and Club America.

Rio wants Jose as next boss

JOSE MOURINHO is the ideal choice to take over from Alex Ferguson when the Manchester United boss retires, according to Rio Ferdinand.
The 67-year-old Scot originally planned to quit at the end of the 2004-05 season but then famously reversed his plans.

But he has hinted he might finally be ready to step down from the Old Trafford hotseat within the next three years and Ferdinand reckons The Special One is the ideal choice to replace him.

Speaking to GQ, the England defender said: “There are very few people who could take over but if you're talking about someone with the ego and personality to do it, then Jose Mourinho is the name that jumps out at you.”

The Inter Milan coach previously spent three years at Chelsea where he won two Premier League titles and an FA Cup before quitting the west Londoners in 2007.

Italian giants Inter are six points clear at the top of Serie A, and Mourinho looks set to clinch the Scudetto in his first season in charge at the San Siro.
