Sunderland 1 Liverpool 0
LIVERPOOL'S title charge burst as a BALLOON stunned them at Sunderland.
Darren Bent's third-minute shot took a huge deflection as it flew past helplesss keeper Pepe Reina.
The balloon was thrown onto the pitch by a LIVERPOOL fan just seconds before the goal.
The Reds were fuming and protested about the incident but the strike stood.
t leaves Rafa Benitez's side in eighth in the Premier League and SEVEN points behind leaders Chelsea.
Sunderland started brightly and midfielder Andy Reid sliced his left-foot effort high and wide inside the opening minutes.
But Bent was on target for Sunderland's bizarre opener.
The striker picked up the ball just inside the box and hit his shot directly at Kop keeper Pepe Reina.
However, it struck the balloon in front of Reina, confusing the Spaniard, who dived the wrong way as the ball flew into the net.
Liverpool were furious and protested to referee Mike Jones and his assistant but any claims fell on deaf ears.
The Reds were furious, and it could have got worse as Lorik Cana met Reid's corner with a firm header but he missed the target.
Craig Gordon saved well from Ryan Babel before Bent tested Reina soon after.
Yossi Benayoun had a shot deflected wide and Fabio Aurelio also went close with a free-kick.
Liverpool tried to press for the leveller but the hosts responded by attacking.
Reid almost caught out Reina with a wind-assisted set piece before Bent fired wide.
Sunderland might have doubled their lead when Kenwyne Jones slid in Bent, who rounded Reina before shooting, but the keeper recovered in time to save.
Bent was in again when he latched on to a weak header to beat Reina to the ball and shoot against the foot of the post.
Bruce and Benitez became involved in a furious row on the sidelines as the injured Jones was treated on the pitch.
But the fourth official eventually separated the pair as tensions grew.
Benitez made a number of switches as the match went on but his side could not muster the equaliser they desperately wanted.

Arsenal 3 Birmingham 1
ARSENAL maintained their 100 per cent home record with a 3-1 win over Birmingham.
Robin van Persie and Abou Diaby had fired the Gunners into a 2-0 lead inside 18 minutes, before Lee Bowyer pulled one back before half-time.
But soaking up plenty of pressure from the battling Blues, Andrey Arshavin wrapped up the victory late on
New Birmingham owner Carson Yeung was in the stands, but in the space of 18 minutes he witnessed the gulf between the two clubs.
But before the first two goals, Arsenal suffered an injury blow when Theo Walcott was left in a heap by Liam Ridgewell.
The Arsenal forward bent his knee back when falling, and had to go off for extended treatment.
As play continued, the home side should have taken the lead when Diaby's left-wing cross was knocked back by Van Persie at the far post, only for Tomas Rosicky to fluff the finish.
The opening goal finally came on 16 minutes, Alex Song slipping a lovely low pass through the left side of the penalty area.
Van Persie took the ball on his right, then switched back inside past Stephen Carr before drilling it into the far corner.
Before Birmingham could recover, it was 2-0.
Emmanuel Eboue put Rosicky clear down the right channel, and his cut-back from the near post was smashed in by Diaby first time.
Arsenal were now in cruise control, but to their credit, Birmingham kept up the fight.Arsenal quickly looked to restore their two-goal cushion, and Hart saved well down at the right-hand post to deny Arshavin.
Neither side made any changes for the start of the second half.
Birmingham, clearly boosted by their goal, had an early chance when the ball flashed across the Arsenal six-yard box but did not fall for a Blue shirt.
At the other end, Arshavin stabbed a close-range effort wide after Diaby's low centre.
It was then goalkeeper Joe Hart's turn to almost be embarrassed when Cesc Fabregas cut out his weak pass, only for the Blues keeper to recover and make a smart low save.
Larsson was, at full stretch, penalised for what referee Lee Probert deemed a somewhat harsh backpass, giving Arsenal an indirect free-kick eight yards out.
Fabregas rolled the ball to Arshavin, who stopped it for van Persie, but the Dutchman's fierce effort skimmed off the top of the crossbar.
With 20 minutes left, James McFadden was replaced by Gary McSheffrey.
Arshavin, however, settled matters with five minutes left when he slotted home from just inside the penalty area after a quick counter attack.

Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 1
JOHN TERRY flew into a rage after high-flying Chelsea were undone by two corner blunders.
The Blues skipper lost it with his bungling team-mates after James Collins headed home a second-half winner at Villa Park.
Didier Drogba had given the visitors the lead but Richard Dunne equalised.And Collins struck to stun Carlo Ancelotti's side, who were top of the league heading into the match.
Striker Gabriel Agbonlahor caused the Blues' backline alsorts of problems early on with his blistering pace.
The England man had a shot deflected wide before he was bundled down in the box by Jose Bosingwa.
Ref Keith Friend, stepping in for Steve Bennett who was ill, waved away Villa's protest.
Agbonlahor then fired straight at Petr Cech as Villa dominated.
But, against the run of play, Drogba gave Chelsea the lead - with a helping hand from Brad Freidel.
The Villa keeper totally misjudged Drogba's speculative 35-yard effort and the ball embarassingly bounce over him.
Martin O'Neill was sent tumbling to the ground after Nicolas Anelka crashed into him after making a touch-line challenge.
And like their boss, Villa picked themselves up and brushed themselves off to equalise.
Frank Lampard should have headed Ashley Young's corner clear but he could only flick it on for Dunne to head home.
Villa started the second half just as they finished it and seven minutes in were rewarded with a second goal.
Some more dreadful defending for the Blues was punished as Collins had a free run and header to smashed in at the back post.
Didier Drogba was guilty of failing to make any attempt to mark the centre-back.
But he tried his best to make up for the error by creating a number of chances.
Frank Lampard blasted wide from 20 yards before Friedel saved well from Michael Essien.
Deco, who had been put clear by Drogba, and winger Florent Malouda were also denied by the American.
Nicolas Anelka also went close but Villa's defence, led by Dunne and Collins held firm.

ANTONIO VALENCIA opened his account as Manchester United cashed in on their rivals' blunders.
The winger was on target for the first time since joining the champions after Zat Knight's horror own goal.
And with Chelsea and Liverpool both losing, United climbed back up to the Premier League summit.Gary Megson had been plotting a smash 'n grab raid at Old Trafford, sending out Kevin Davies as his lone forward.
But Bolton's carefully laid plans were ripped to shreds within five minutes of kick-off.
Michael Owen made a right hash of a header — but, with the ball spinning wide, it cannoned off Knight's knee and into the back of the net.
And Owen fluffed another header a minute later, nodding straight at keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
The Finn was called into action soon after when Valencia fired in a 25-yard drive. At the other end, Davies wasted a rare chance in the United half.
Just after the half hour mark, Owen man turned provider for the hosts' second.
The ex-England man worked the ball wide for Valencia, who ripped through the Bolton back-line before hammering home.
Davies went into the book two minutes after the break when he chopped Patrice Evra down on the edge of the area.
Edwin Van der Sar, making his first start this season, desperately denied Knight with a save on his goal-line.
United then raced down the other end again, with Owen dragging a shot wide. And Owen fluffed another glorious chance when he ran onto Dimitar Berbatov's sublime pass, only to take too long and screw wide.
Ivan Klasnic and Mark Davies replaced Lee Chung-yong and Tamir Cohen as Bolton attempted to stem the flow of United attacks.
And they managed more than that — grabbing one back on 75 minutes.
Matty Taylor soared above Evra to nod home Davies' cross. But despite a late Bolton flurry, United held on for all three points.

Carlo: JT my new Maldini
CARLO ANCELOTTI says John Terry can become his English Paolo Maldini... but will never be his pet.
The Chelsea boss insists captain Terry is the heart and soul of his club, just as Maldini was during an incredible 24-year career at AC Milan.
Former Milan chief Ancelotti, whose Blues play at Aston Villa today, said: "Their careers are very close, not just in terms of their defensive play but also their professionalism.
"Maldini was 40 years old when he played his final game for Milan last season and I think John can do this as well.
"He has no physical problems but a lot of passion and this is the most important thing to continue playing to 39 or 40.
"With the improvement in preparation, physical training and medical treatment, the players will be able to continue for a lot longer."
England skipper Terry, 28, has spent 14 years at Stamford Bridge since joining as a schoolboy and has signed a new £160,000-a-week contract to 2014.
Ancelotti appeared on an Italian TV comedy show this week when it was claimed JT had taken over from Milan stalwart Filippo Inzaghi as his new pet.
He said: "I don't even know what 'pet' means.
"The TV programme made a comparison with Inzaghi and all I can say is I have respect for all my players who work with enthusiasm, for Terry, Inzaghi, Maldini, Gattuso... "
Raise it, Rio
ALEX FERGUSON has told Rio Ferdinand his World Cup dream could die unless he raises his game.
The Manchester United defender is having a miserable season and was badly at fault in England's 1-0 defeat in Ukraine a week ago.
United boss Fergie said: "He has to get good form. That's an important issue for the coach to pick the right team.
"In defence you've maybe got more options than other positions. He will need to get his form right."
Ferdinand has dropped clangers in two matches for Fabio Capello's England.
Fergie added: "I'm sure he's taken the criticism on board. Do I think he'll go to the World Cup? Yes, of course."
