FERGIE will enjoy his porridge this morning — but this Euro hard luck tale will be hard to swallow for Celtic.
Sir Alex Ferguson had moaned that his oats just aren’t as sweet after a defeat at Celtic Park. The Manchester United gaffer must have feared Scott McDonald’s fabulous first-half finish would have him choking again.
But, just as the Hoops dreamed of a second win over United in three seasons, they were dealt a sickly spoonful of heartache. Artur Boruc was deceived by
Cristiano Ronaldo’s swerving shot and pushed it out for Ryan Giggs to nod home. After so many last-gasp wins here, these dropped points pained Gordon Strachan and every Hoops fans like a dagger to the heart. Strach had called for heroes to carve their names into folklore by stunning United. Every one of his players rose to the occasion on a night of guts and endeavour.
But the world crashed down round Celts six minutes from time as Giggs pounced for a close range header. Ronaldo’s dipping, swerving shot deceived Boruc and the goalie could only push it back into the danger zone. Giggs’ header plunged Parkhead into silence.
United might even have won it at the death as Ronaldo fired wide and Berbatov missed a sitter in injury time. That would have been too cruel on Celts after being denied a famous win.
