Lee Chong Wee Got Silver Medal In Olimpic

BEIJING - China's Lin Dan has won the gold medal in men's singles at the Olympic badminton tournament, defeating Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei in straight sets.

Top-seeded Lin was in control from the outset Sunday and coasted to a 21-12, 21-8 win over the second-seeded Lee to give China its third gold medal in badminton.
Lin took an 11-1 lead in the second game with Lee's only point coming on an unforced error by Lin.
Lee was bidding for Malaysia's first gold medal in the Olympics but was no match for the top-ranked Lin, who won the match with a smash down the line that Lee returned into the net.

United out to kick Blackburn at League Cup quarter-final

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) – Manchester United's pursuit of honours on four fronts could spell trouble for one of their former heroes when Blackburn visit Old Trafford for a League Cup quarter-final tie on Wednesday.

Paul Ince was a key member of Sir Alex Ferguson's team between 1989 and 1995 but is not having such an easy time of it as a manager at Blackburn.

Ince steps out at Old Trafford as a manager for the first time with his team sitting second bottom of the Premier League on a winless run of nine league matches.

That run was started with a 2-0 defeat to United at Ewood Park back in October but Ferguson's fringe players will not think twice about piling more misery on the United legend.

The likes of Nani, Darron Gibson, Rafael Da Silva and Rodrigo Possebon failed to impress as they struggled past QPR with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the previous round.

But United's depth of reserves means Ferguson can also field significantly more experienced operators like Carlos Tevez, Jonny Evans, Tomasz Kuszczak and Anderson.

The Scot even hinted last week that veteran Paul Scholes, who has been out since September with a knee injury, could be gradually phased back into action and the former England midfielder might appear on the bench.

The win over QPR was the start of a five-match run of clean sheets for United and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is adamant that despite United still trailing in the Premier League, confidence and momentum are growing at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman said: "We feel quite comfortable. The only thing you can do is win your own games.

"Every club has 38 matches to play and somehow we have to find a date where we can play those extra games.

"Hopefully it won't be too late, but either way, our task is quite straightforward. We just have to get more points than the others."

Despite winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups at United, Ince endured an uneasy relationship with Ferguson after he left Old Trafford for Inter Milan in 1995, with the Scot famously branding his former player a "big-time Charlie."

That wound has subsequently healed but while Ferguson will have a degree of sympathy for his Blackburn counter-part, that will not stop him looking for a win that will greatly increase the pressure on Ince ahead of Blackburn's game against Liverpool at the weekend.

Even though Blackburn's position is precarious, Ince is adamant that the spirit in the squad is strong enough to pull through their current problems, starting at Old Trafford.

Ince said: "I don't worry about myself but what does concern me is the lads.

"You've got to pick yourself up and what we don't want is any negativity. A few of the senior players have spoken up in the changing room and the spirit's great, we stick together, keep smiling and pick ourselves up.

"We don't want any negativity around the club. If it's going to be outside the club then we can't change that but it's important that the players, in my changing room and on my training ground keep their spirits high, that's important and that's what I feel and what they feel."

Ince will have Martin Olsson back from suspension but David Dunn is still out and Stephen Reid will be absent for the rest of the season.

Championship side Watford entertain Tottenham in Wednesday's other quarter-final tie and holders Spurs could welcome back Croatia playmaker Luka Modric, who has been sidelined for the last fortnight with a groin injury.

C.Ronaldo Send off

ALEX FERGUSON stood by Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese winger saw red.

Ronaldo told reporters he heard a ‘beep’ a split second before he handled Wayne Rooney’s corner and earned a second yellow card.

United boss Fergie said: “He thought he’d heard the referee’s whistle.

"He was trying to protect himself from the ball hitting his face, he may have got a little shove as well.”

Ref Howard Webb, who had already booked Ronaldo for a foul on Shaun Wright-Phillips, showed the Portuguese star a second yellow.

United, ahead through Rooney’s 42nd-minute goal, then had to hold out with 10 men for the final 22 minutes of the Manchester derby.

Fergie added: “I’m not going to get into the refereeing, we’d be here all day.

“Sometimes you have to overcome things and we have done that today, with 10 men we proved ourselves.”

Ronaldo’s dismissal means he is likely to be banned for Wednesday’s Carling Cup-tie against Blackburn at Old Trafford — when Fergie will be serving a touchline ban.

Yet City boss Mark Hughes said ref Webb had no choice.

Sparky said: “It’s a soft sending off, but it’s a second bookable offence, he had to go.

“I don’t know what motive he had for doing it. Why didn’t he head it?”

Man City 0 Man Utd 1

WAYNE ROONEY was as good as his word. After the midweek draw in Villarreal, he predicted United would return from Spain and be crowned Kings of Manchester. It was a throne they had abdicated last season when they lost both derbies.

Yesterday the champions of England and Europe were back in charge of their city. The scoreline was narrow and City did have a shot cleared off the line in injury time. But the 90-plus minutes showed a huge gulf between the two teams. The deciding goal came from the boot of Rooney, his 100th in club football — 17 for Everton and 83 now for United.

He will not have had a simpler one in the century but it meant as much as any of them. After eight games without a goal, his frustration was beginning to boil. Then with one stab of his foot from two yards the burden was lifted from his shoulders as he took to the air in celebration.

It was two minutes before the break as City failed to clear their lines. Michael Carrick controlled the ball with his right foot and shot with his left. Joe Hart saved but the alert Rooney buried the rebound. He charged all the way to the halfway line before jumping and punching the air. What a contrast this was to a later moment of ignominy for Cristiano Ronaldo.

For the second time in three visits to The City of Manchester Stadium, he was sent off. Two seasons ago it was for a lunge on Andy Cole — yesterday it was for sheer stupidity. He had been booked in the first half for a foul on Shaun Wright-Phillips, one of four United players shown yellow for fouling the same player.

The next time Alex Ferguson moans about treatment dished out to Ronaldo he should be reminded of the way Wright-Phillips was systematically fouled by the Reds and almost kicked out the game. Ronaldo could have been sent off for that incident as, after being booked, he sarcastically clapped referee Howard Webb. Remember Rooney being sent off for the same thing at Villarreal three seasons ago? His second yellow came in the 67th minute and he can have no complaints.

Rooney fired over a corner and Ronaldo realised he had mistimed his jump so put his hands up and batted the ball down. There was no push, there had been no whistle, there was no excuse. His look of disbelief must have been at his own aberration. Fortunately for him, United were strong enough to hold out with 10 although City very nearly grabbed an undeserved share of the points.

From an injury-time corner, Darren Fletcher’s clearance bounced off Vincent Kompany and rebounded to Richard Dunne and his drilled shot was cleared off the line by Patrice Evra. The French full-back was superb throughout this game. He began his United career with this fixture in January 2006 as City won 3-1 and had a nightmare. But he has hardly put a foot wrong since and yesterday caused more problems down the flank than Ronaldo.

Another unsung hero is Ji-Sung Park, who ensures the opposition can never settle when he is around. United held possession better, played the ball around better and defended better to claim their 13th clean sheet in 22 games in all competitions. City can point to the injury-time goalline clearance — yet from that, United could have got a second.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart had raced up for the corner and had to sprint back to stop a 50-yard Rooney lob from going in. City also had a moment in the first half when Stephen Ireland’s shot just needed a touch from Micah Richards to divert it in. In truth the richest club in the world still has some way to go before it is on a par with the biggest in the world. Eastlands boss Mark Hughes knows that. He refers to City as a work in progress because, when it comes to the here and now, United remain the team to beat at home and abroad.

Chelsea 1 Arsenal 2

ARSENAL love Robin’ from the rich at football’s top table. If only they could stop giving to the poor they would be right in the Premier League title race.
The Gunners added Chelsea to the scalp of Manchester United in a baffling start to the season which has also seen them lose to the likes of Hull, Fulham and Stoke.

It was their very own Robin Hood, Robin van Persie, who plundered the spoils from a shell-shocked Blues. The Dutchman scored twice — the first clearly offside — in the space of three minutes around the hour mark to turn this game on its head after Chelsea had apparently been on their way to victory when Johan Djourou put through his own goal in the first half. Not many expected this result, especially the bookies who were quoting Arsenal at odds as long as 5-1 to win. But with the return of Emmanuel Adebayor after a lengthy injury absence and Van Persie finding his way back to form this was a reinvigorated Gunners. Adebayor has been badly missed and he figured in both goals.

You feel Chelsea could do with their most potent attacking weapon, Didier Drogba, back too. Love him or hate him, Drogba gives Chelsea an extra aggressive edge which was lacking here. When he hasn’t been off talking to Inter Milan about a transfer, Drogba has been either injured or suspended and, while Nicolas Anelka has discovered the route to goal, there is no substitute for the Drog.

The Blues have only lost two Premier League home games in 4½ years but both have come under new boss Phil Scolari in the space of just over a month — the other being against Liverpool. Jose Mourinho did not lose a single league game at Stamford Bridge in his entire reign.

And Scolari is developing an unwanted reputation for failing to do the business against the big boys, having also slipped up with a home draw against Manchester United. They could not make the most of the comedy of errors from Arsenal which gifted them the lead.

Keeper Manuel Almunia caught the ball and bowled it out into no-man’s-land to the surprise of right-back Jose Boswinga, who collected and stormed forward. The Portuguese defender exchanged passes with Anelka and fired in a low cross which was turned in at the near post by the unfortunate Djourou — a Swiss with particularly bad timing.

It was a goal symptomatic of the Gunners’ troubles this season where they have been guilty of numerous defensive errors. But Van Persie signalled Arsenal were not going to simply accept another defeat and his shot on the turn tested Petr Cech, who saved well to his left. Chelsea lost their way and their finishing was none too clever, either, with Anelka putting a diving header well wide and the usually reliable Frank Lampard shooting badly wide from 20 yards — a position where he invariably buries the ball in the bottom corner.

Arsenal were back in it on 59 minutes when Adebayor leapt to win a header and Samir Nasri fed Denilson. The midfielder chested down and played in Van Persie, who was offside, but the flag never came and he rattled the equaliser high into the net.

Scolari did some moaning about that one afterwards and about another decision when Salomon Kalou was through on goal only to be given offside when he was onside. So at least one thing is clear — he may not be getting Mourinho’s results but he is starting to whinge like him. A stunned Chelsea crowd were rocked again when Adebayor climbed high once more to find Van Persie, who spun round brilliantly and smacked a low drive between Lampard’s legs and just inside the post.

Manager Arsene Wenger, who has kept faith with his beleaguered troops throughout this difficult campaign, was off the bench celebrating — which is a rare sight this season. And he had little cause for concern as the clock ticked down and Chelsea ran out of ideas. William Gallas, making his return to the Bridge, won praise from Wenger for his part in keeping Chelsea at bay.

But the behaviour of Gallas, who was sacked as Arsenal captain for criticising his team-mates, was as curious as ever. On each Arsenal goal he merely trotted back to his position for the kick-off while his team-mates engulfed Van Persie.
Then, at full-time, he strolled to the match officials to shake their hands while his team-mates jumped all over one other. But then Gallas walked towards the corner where the Arsenal fans were congregated and threw his shirt into the throng while half of his team-mates followed suit in an apparent display of unity.

Ferdinand: We must win ugly

RIO FERDINAND has told his Manchester United team-mates:

“We’ve got to learn how to grind out wins again.”

The reigning Premier League champions visit arch-rivals Manchester City tomorrow for a crunch derby encounter and are desperate for victory to avoid losing touch with the pacesetters. Although third-placed United have a game in hand, they are eight points behind joint leaders Chelsea and Liverpool. It is a worrying gap so early in the season and Ferdinand knows United have to get their act together quickly. But the England centre-back points to the experience of last season. Then, after a bad start, the Red Devils went on a run of narrow victories which proved crucial in clinching their 10th Premier League title.

Ferdinand said: “We had about a five-week period where we kept winning 1-0 a lot.
If that’s the way we need to do it this season, then we need to start doing it very soon. Results are important and we must start winning matches. We need to start grinding out victories.”

United have won only one of their last three top-flight games.
They lost 2-1 at Arsenal three weeks ago and then thumped new-boys Stoke 5-0, only to draw 0-0 at Aston Villa last Saturday.

Ferdinand, 30, said: “Results-wise it hasn’t come together yet. Performance-wise, against Villa, I thought if anyone was going to win it, it was going to be us. And, against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, when we also drew 0-0, we played some decent stuff. We hit the bar and we were the team more likely to score.”

City had the Indian sign over United last term under former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson and beat them in both league encounters. And that is something Ferdinand, who has now been at Old Trafford for six years, does not like to be reminded of.

He said: “We have not been the best against them recently. At Old Trafford we didn’t play well and they probably deserved the 2-1 result they got. But we should have beaten them at their place. They didn’t really touch the ball until the shot by Geovanni, which deflected off Nemanja Vidic and went in. They were very fortunate that day but I would take that if it happened to us, just to get a win under our belts. The title battle is different this year. Arsenal were up there early last season, then we were and then Chelsea started pegging us back towards the end. Chelsea and Liverpool are out there at the moment and it’s about us getting back into the race.”

It is ironic that Ferdinand should be talking about scruffy results when City will be parading someone who represents the Beautiful Game — and a man Ferdinand loves watching — £32.5million Brazilian superstar Robinho.

Ferdinand added: “Robinho is the type of player I’d have admired growing up as a kid. He’s a fantastic footballer who plays to entertain. He’s someone you’d pay to go and watch. His goal against Arsenal last week was just pure cheek. Did I replay it? No, my Sky+ has broken, but I’m sure loads of kids watched it again and again.
There are going to be a few players on the pitch on Sunday capable of doing things like that, so I’m sure it’ll be a spectacle. I’ve met Robinho and he seems like a nice kid"

We're the kings of Manchester

WAYNE ROONEY plans to show who the real Kings of Manchester are.

Manchester United face rivals City on Sunday in a massive clash between the title chasers and the world’s richest club. Yet for all the Blue talk of global domination, Rooney believes there is a huge wake-up call waiting at Eastlands this weekend. Especially with United desperate to claim revenge after losing both derby clashes last season.

Rooney, 23, said: “Sunday is a massive game. We owe the fans a derby win, even though we did win two trophies last season. Losing both games last season was extremely disappointing. It is a massive game, especially after what has happened at City with the takeover. It will be nice to show them who the Kings of Manchester are.”

Rooney insists that the publicity City are getting following their big-money takeover by Sheikh Mansour’s group means nothing until they start putting some silverware on the table.

He said: “It doesn’t irritate us that City are getting all this publicity.
If they were winning trophies it would irritate me but while they are still lingering in mid-table I am not really too bothered about it. The money coming into City is good for the league. For years the usual top four have been running away with it. You want more competition. If it happens that it is the top 10 fighting for the one place at the top then it will make it a more exciting league. It wouldn’t bother me if it was City making the challenge because you want competition.”

Rooney is revved up for Sunday having missed both derby defeats last season through injury and suspension. He said: “That was really frustrating, having to watch when you cannot do anything. It is different to any other game. The atmosphere at City is a really good one. The players always get up for it. If we can win the game, and I am sure we can, it will be a great result for us.”

There is more at stake for United than just local bragging rights, with an eight-point gap at the top to make up after some poor away form.

Rooney declared: “It is a must-win game for us.

“We cannot afford not to win it, especially if Liverpool and Chelsea win. We have had some difficult away matches but we should still have done better. But we are still not too far away from Liverpool and Chelsea and that is the main thing for us.
We normally finish the season strongly so hopefully we can do that again.”

Rooney would love to mark Sunday’s showdown with the 100th club goal of his career.
He has been stuck on 99 since the 3-0 win over Celtic at Old Trafford on October 21.

Rooney did everything but score in a goalless draw at Villarreal on Tuesday night that saw United into the next stage of the Champions League with a Group E game to spare.

Villarreal resist Ronaldo onslaught

Villarreal CF and Manchester United FC booked their places in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages after an eventful game provided everything but a goal – making it four 0-0 draws between these sides in as many meetings.
The sides had already assured their places atop Group E bar an unlikely combination of results, and although they eliminated any doubts at El Madrigal, the scoreline belied a game not lacking in attacking intention, with Cristiano Ronaldo putting in a scintillating performance. The Portuguese international came closest to breaking the deadlock when he hit the bar with a lovely first-half volley and showed creative intelligence for 90 minutes, harrying the Villarreal defence until left-back Joan Capdevila was shown a straight red card for a rash tackle with eight minutes left.
The first-half pace had been ferocious as Ronaldo applied huge amounts of verve and enthusiasm to his work, looking nothing like a man whose participation had been in doubt due to a minor leg injury. As Villarreal stuck to their methodical trademark of accurate passing, the European champions quickly drove the ball high up the pitch whenever possible as Ronaldo and Nani stalked the touchlines. It was an effective tactic, particularly with the visitor's defence comfortable containing former team-mate Giuseppe Rossi and Ariel Ibagaza.
Rossi and Santi Cazorla had fierce shots on target while Anderson did likewise at the other end as the teams jockeyed for supremacy. United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak's occasional fumbles exhibited some nerves, but it was opposite number Diego López that owed most to a stroke of good fortune five minutes before half-time, and it was inevitably Ronaldo that caused the scare. That the United No7 was playing so well and Javi Venta and Sebastián Eguren both picked up first-half yellow cards was no coincidence, each presenting opportunities for the winger to show his set-piece expertise. His first free-kick caused little trouble but his next brought a tremendous save from López, who had been well beaten when Ronaldo's technically-brilliant volley ricocheted off the crossbar moments earlier.
United's talismanic winger picked up where he had left off after the restart, firing in a hard, low drive that López fumbled but, first to the rebound, Wayne Rooney could not profit. Such was Ronaldo's threat that Villarreal increasingly used three men to close him down, allowing Darren Fletcher space to shoot narrowly wide, while Anderson twice forced stops from López. United were in total control, and midway through the second period Rooney got in on the act, volleying against López's arms from point-blank range.
Rooney was in the thick of the action again soon after, waltzing down the left wing and sending in a deflected shot that was looping into the net before Capdevila intervened to divert it over the bar. It was where the defender's luck ran out, however, as he was soon given his marching orders, meaning he will miss the trip to Celtic FC on Matchday 6. Top of Group E on goal difference, United host Aalborg BK knowing they will qualify as section winners if they match the Spanish side's scoreline.

Aston Villa 0 vs Mn. Utd 0

FEBRUARY 1993 was the last time a Premier League weekend went by without any of the Big Four scoring. But after Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal had all failed to hit the target earlier in the day, Man Utd also drew a blank in the late game - with Wayne Rooney missing a sitter.

And to cap a miserable afternoon, Cristiano Ronaldo was withdrawn with 10 minutes left, clutching his knee and making gestures to the home fans as he disappeared down the tunnel. But Sir Alex Ferguson refused to rule out United's chances of making up the eight point gap on the league leaders.

He said: “We are capable of going on runs as everyone knows. If we got to within two points or three points by New Year’s Day it would give us a great chance.”

He also refused to write either Villa or Arsenal off - despite the Gunners FIFTH defeat of the season.

He said: “Arsenal have got too much quality to say that. You can’t rule Aston Villa out of staying in the top four, they’ve got a very organised side and teams will find it difficult coming here.”

The Premier League champions had the better of the first half but struggled to create many clear cut chances. Ronaldo had a fierce strike on 13 minutes which Brad Freidel beat out to his left and the Portugal international hit the wall attempting a trademark free-kick 10 minutes later. Villa were looking to benefit from Arsenal’s ongoing demise and move into the top four by picking up at least a point.

Aston Villa: Friedel, Reo-Coker, Davies, Laursen, Luke Young, Sidwell (Carew 81), Petrov, Barry, Milner, Agbonlahor, Ashley Young. Subs Not Used: Guzan, Harewood, Knight, Salifou, Shorey, Gardner. Booked: Davies.

Man Utd: Van der Sar, O’Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo (Anderson 82), Park, Carrick, Giggs, Rooney, Tevez (Nani 71). Subs Not Used: Kuszczak, Welbeck, Evans, Gibson, Rafael Da Silva.

Three Lions Destroy Germany

ENGLAND continued their fine run under Fabio Capello with a 2-1 win against Germany in BerlinThe England skipper rose to head his side’s winner six minutes from time, having been involved in a king-size cock-up with keeper Scott Carson which gifted Germany their equaliser.
Nobody on England’s side hurts more in defeat and enjoys victory more than Chelsea captain Terry.

His ability to recover from despair is becoming legendary.
He was distraught last May after missing the penalty in the Champions League shootout against Manchester United which would have won Chelsea the trophy.

But in his very next game, a week later for England against the USA, an emotional Terry headed in the first goal in a 2-0 win.
This is a captain who leads by example and the back-up men who did the country proud last night had the ideal man to show them exactly what the Three Lions badge means.
The victory completed a magnificent year in charge for boss Fabio Capello, who can do no wrong even when he is without most of his senior players. In his 10 games since taking over, the Italian has won eight, drawn one and lost one. Impressive in anyone’s language

Celtic 1 Man.u 1 Clash Euro

FERGIE will enjoy his porridge this morning — but this Euro hard luck tale will be hard to swallow for Celtic.

Sir Alex Ferguson had moaned that his oats just aren’t as sweet after a defeat at Celtic Park. The Manchester United gaffer must have feared Scott McDonald’s fabulous first-half finish would have him choking again.

But, just as the Hoops dreamed of a second win over United in three seasons, they were dealt a sickly spoonful of heartache. Artur Boruc was deceived by
Cristiano Ronaldo’s swerving shot and pushed it out for Ryan Giggs to nod home. After so many last-gasp wins here, these dropped points pained Gordon Strachan and every Hoops fans like a dagger to the heart. Strach had called for heroes to carve their names into folklore by stunning United. Every one of his players rose to the occasion on a night of guts and endeavour.

But the world crashed down round Celts six minutes from time as Giggs pounced for a close range header. Ronaldo’s dipping, swerving shot deceived Boruc and the goalie could only push it back into the danger zone. Giggs’ header plunged Parkhead into silence.
United might even have won it at the death as Ronaldo fired wide and Berbatov missed a sitter in injury time. That would have been too cruel on Celts after being denied a famous win.

Ronaldo: I'm at the right club

CRISTIANO RONALDO has dropped the biggest hint yet he will stay at Manchester United beyond next summer.
The Portuguese star was linked with a £80million move to Real Madrid last summer but stayed after a last-ditch change of heart — and boss Alex Ferguson’s refusal to sell.
Now after last term’s League and Champions League double, Ronaldo says he can fulfil his ambitions at United.
He said: “Last season was the best moment of my career but I know I can get even better.
“I want to score more, win more trophies. I’m at the right club for that.
“Last season enabled me to achieve great things on many levels and I’m really happy.
“I’m lucky as I have a great relationship with everyone at United.”

Torres over Ronaldo

RAFA BENITEZ believes Fernando Torres deserves to be named European Player of the Year — ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Liverpool boss believes Torres merits the Ballon D'Or after his contributions for both club and country.
He said: "Fernando would be my selection.
'He has scored a lot of goals and won the Euros with Spain. Ronaldo is also a very good player but I choose Fernando.'

Beckham Join Milan For Loan

RONALDINHO has backed David Beckham's loan switch to AC Milan.
England ace Beckham will join the Italian giants from LA Galaxy in January to keep up his fitness levels during the MLS off-season.
And Brazil star Ronnie, who signed for AC Milan in the summer, cannot wait to play alongside Beckham.

He said: "He's a great champion. I hope he's happy with us.
"We'll take turns taking free kicks.
"I've met him in the past and I have always been struck by his class."
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani claims Beckham's arrival is a dream come true.
He said: "David's arrival is a dream that becomes a reality.
"We haven't written the contract but the agreement has been reached.
"Beckham will be at Milan on loan from January 7 until the start of the Major League Soccer, hence, for two months-and-a-half to three months
."

Ronaldo Upcoming To help win 2-0 again West Ham

CRISTIANO RONALDO received a world player of the year award and Golden Boot before kick-off.
Then within half an hour, he showed just why those prestigious trophies will be forcing their way on to his already cluttered mantelpiece.
Two first-half goals, a match-winning display and all with the minimum of effort.

The world award is from FIFPro decided by 50 players from around the globe — and there is no greater honour than to be recognised by your contemporaries in any trade.
Ron was rightly acknowledged with that, while his 31 league goals last season landed the Golden Boot.

He received both awards with some humility, aware that many Manchester United fans still see his summer attempts to engineer a move to Real Madrid as treacherous.
It was muted cheers at best but the noise level went up when he found the back of the net.
The more goals he gets the easier it will be for even his staunchest critic to forgive.
A few hundred even tried to revive the ‘Viva Ronaldo’ chant.

He missed pre-season and the opening four games because of ankle surgery in the summer so he is only warming up. Imagine what he can do when he is really hot.
Well, you do not have to imagine, just get the tapes out from last season, a campaign he dominated with his skill, power and precision

Liverpool Lucky Still Leader

RAFA BENITEZ watched Liverpool stutter to a 1-0 win and insisted: We’ve got the guts to stay top.
Steven Gerrard’s 75th-minute penalty sunk Pompey and kept the Kop side three points clear of Chelsea after Benitez made FOUR changes to the side which won at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The Anfield boss said: “This sends the message to players and everyone that we can change it and still win.

It was an agonising defeat for Tony Adams in his first game since replacing Harry Redknapp as Portsmouth boss.
But he refused to blame Papa Bouba Diop, whose extraordinary handball — punching Fabio Aurelio’s corner off Sami Hyypia’s head — handed Liverpool their spot-kick winner.

Liverpool On the Top EPL

LIVERPOOL crushed Chelsea's incredible home record to storm to the Premier League summit.
Xabi Alonso's early deflected effort earned the Reds a superb win at fortress Stamford Bridge, where the hosts had gone 86 league games without defeat. And it sends Rafa Benitez's men three points clear at the top of the table.
Chelsea began brightly and saw Deco's early shot deflected to safety.
But it was Liverpool who went ahead in the ninth minute with their first attack of the game. Chelsea failed to deal with a throw-in as John Terry could only half clear Dirk Kuyt’s flick-on. The ball fell to Alonso on the edge of the penalty area and his shot deflected off Ricardo Carvalho and past keeper Petr Cech. And after nudging in front, the Reds began to dominate.

Albert Riera beat Jose Bosingwa on the left flank before firing into the side-netting, while Cech was forced to tip a fizzing volley from Steven Gerrard over the bar. Chelsea were struggling for ideas and Deco sent a left-foot drive wide from 18 yards.

They started the second half well and Florent Malouda was felled by keeper Pepe Reina in the area but he had already been ruled offside.
But they had a massive escape when Alonso’s 25-yard free-kick rebounded off the foot of the post with Cech well beaten.
Chelsea piled forward in a desperate hunt for a leveller and Ashley Cole should have scored from Franco Di Santo's knock down.

And Jamie Carragher was then alert to deny Deco room to find the target inside the area. But Liverpool held on for what may prove to be a crucial win in the race for the title.

Man.United show of strength for Celtic

Dimitar Berbatov struck twice as Manchester United FC moved a step closer to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Celtic FC.

Air of inevitabilityOnce Bulgaria forward Berbatov had broken the deadlock on the half-hour there was an air of inevitability about the outcome of this one-sided Anglo-Scottish contest, and he duly added his fourth goal in two UEFA Champions League outings after the interval, before Wayne Rooney rounded off the scoring with 14 minutes remaining. United proceeded to seven points at the Group E summit, leaving Celtic with just a point to their name and plenty of soul-searching to do before the teams meet again in a fortnight's time.

Van der Sar savesSir Alex Ferguson had speculated beforehand about finding a way of fitting Berbatov, Rooney and Carlos Tévez into the same attack. Applying the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' theory, however, he kept Rooney and Berbatov up front in a 4-4-2 formation. Yet it was Celtic, missing target men Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras and starting with a lone forward in Scott McDonald, who threatened an early goal, Aiden McGeady drawing a full-stretch stop from Edwin van der Sar with a low strike from the edge of the area. Then, from McGeady's left-wing cross, defender Gary Caldwell – playing in an unaccustomed midfield holding role – crashed in a half-volley that the goalkeeper tipped over.

On the back footYet Premier League titleholders United soon had the Scottish champions on the back foot. With the half-hour approaching, Berbatov's quick feet fashioned a shooting opportunity for Cristiano Ronaldo whose first-time effort rustled the side-netting. Moments later, however, United were in front. Nani's corner deflected off Caldwell to John O'Shea and he headed the ball back towards goal where Berbatov turned it past Artur Boruc.

Berbatov tap-inGiven Celtic's record of nine successive away losses in the competition, their supporters will have feared for them as United really began to find their stride, menacing Boruc's goal again as Rooney sent a strong drive at the keeper. The home team should have gone into the break with their lead doubled by Darren Fletcher but the Scotland captain shot wastefully over after Nemanja Vidić had flicked a Rooney cross on to him at the far post. By the 51st minute it was 2-0 with Berbatov claiming his second following a Ronaldo free-kick. Although Boruc saved the No7's attempt, the ball deflected off his body and across goal where the Bulgarian was ready to accept the tap-in.
Rooney ices the cakeWith Old Trafford sensing further goals, Rooney had an effort ruled offside before blazing over when Boruc's spill left him with an empty net.

United were so on top that Sir Alex felt confident enough to take off Berbatov on the hour; yet it hardly constituted good news for a Celtic defence now asked to contain his replacement, Tévez, who soon saw a shot deflected centimetres wide. Rooney finally iced the cake by concluding a sweeping five-man move which began with Van der Sar's roll-out and ended with the England forward driving a precise low strike into the corner from the edge of the area for his fourth goal in as many games for United.

Man United quartet shortlisted for top Euro award

PARIS: Manchester United’s impressive Champions League and Premier League triumph last season has earned four players nominations for the European Footballer of the Year award, organisers announced on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Cristiano Ronaldo and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar all made the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, with United’s Champions League final rivals Chelsea earning three nominations in Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba.

The Ballon d’Or shortlist is compiled by France Football magazine and is based on nominations from football writers around the globe.
Spain, who won Euro 2008, is the best represented country with seven players, including Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

Torres, who scored Spain’s winner in the final against Germany, told sports daily L’Equipe: “Winning the Ballon d’Or would be like scaling Mount Everest.”

Last year’s winner Brazilian Kaka also made the list, with this year’s winner to be announced on Dec 2.

Cristiano Ronaldo to play for another year

Manchester United's star player Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed in Portuguese newspaper Publico that he will play for the European Champions "for at least another year."
Ronaldo, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for weeks, told Publico: "Sir Alex Ferguson heard my arguments, I heard his and, in fact, it was settled that the best for both parties would be for me to stay.
"Therefore, I can confirm that, next season, I will play for Manchester United.
"Before rumours emerge saying that I will play against my will, I want to make this clear - whoever says or writes that is lying.
"I will play for Manchester with all my heart and soul. I will fight and honour that shirt with the same commitment and dedication as always."
United's relationship with Real has been a casualty of the enduring transfer speculation. Ronaldo, for whom the Spanish club had been prepared to pay 85 million euros, has admitted he is the guilty party.
He continued: "I was responsible for all this controversy. I was the one who publicly expressed my desire to go to Real Madrid. I ended up being, even involuntarily, responsible for the poor relationship between the two clubs."
However 23-year-old Ronaldo, whose contract with United runs till 2012, told the paper he had not ruled out an eventual move to Real Madrid at some point in his career.
He explained: "I knew Real Madrid were interested in signing me and that they had allegedly made a very high offer to Manchester United.
"My desire was, for some time, that Manchester had accepted my transfer to Madrid. Saying otherwise would be to trick people and my own consciousness."
Ronaldo's comments put an end to the speculation and war of words between United and Real concerning the top scorer in the English Premiership last season.
Ronaldo is currently in Portugal where he is recovering from surgery on his injured right ankle.
Ferguson, speaking after United's 0-0 friendly draw with Juventus at Old Trafford on Wednesday, said: "We knew this was the case (that Ronaldo would be staying). I flew to Portugal some weeks ago and we cleared the air and he spoke to some of the players.
"The boy has been through a troubled time in terms of the approaches from Spain, but once he knew my stance, he then settled down.
"He has come out with this interview, which we are all pleased about, and we will welcome him back here this week."
Ferguson has urged the United supporters to stand by Ronaldo, despite his perceived disloyalty.
He said: "The fans have got to understand. It's very difficult when a young boy is tempted by all this money, particularly a young lad from Madeira -- his father died as a young man, so he looks after his mother, sister and brother.
"You can understand that in a way, but Cristiano knows more than anybody that he is very happy here.
"He has always been happy here and there is never a complaint about Manchester United. He has always been treated properly and the players have had a great relationship with him.
"We can put this to bed now. It's finished and the boy is a Manchester United player and that's most important thing."
